Mrs.Joseph–MS Teacher Feature

Written by Danielle Jackson

Barack Obama Academy English teacher Mrs. Joseph is quite a devoted woman and teacher in my eyes.  “Teaching is a way of life, it’s who I am…a teacher,” she says. Mrs.Joseph has been teaching for 26 years, divided between  13 years in a private school, and 13 here in Pittsburgh Public Schools.  She is fond of the IB program because it has so many avenues and offers each student an opportunity to succeed.

Mrs.Joseph believes that being a teacher “isn’t necessarily a talent. If you are meant to be one, then you will be driven by the passion naturally instilled in you.”  In order for you to be successful English, who you are as a person and the way you present yourself to the public in character and in speech has to be important to you.

Aside from school, Mrs. Joseph is married and has a grown daughter. She enjoys shopping, traveling, eating out, and reading.

She has some advice for anyone who wants to become a teacher: “It is not something that you think, your career choice should be your passion. Follow your heart, but STILL listen to your mind.”

Girls Soccer Team Steams Towards Playoffs

Written by Teona Andrews

Latest Two Wins Show Aggressiveness, Hunger for Another Title

The Schenley Lady Spartans soccer team defeated Langley on October 18th, 3-2. For Coach Shevitz, the game went well and once again, the team gave him a great amount of pride. “We didn’t have just one star out there today,” he said. “They all worked as a team.” High scoring junior Leeaza Tokarski agreed, saying that, “Langley is tough and we discussed as much as a team. We needed to have the energy to beat them.”

Tokarski sees tough competition as “worth it. We know Langley is good and overcame it.”

For his part, Coach Shevitz is “excited” about the upcoming playoffs, and a chance to defend the city crown. Both Leeza and her coach continually stressed the idea of having hard work and confidence. It paid off against Langley, and we hope it will pay off against all other foes come playoff time.

The girls beat Ellis 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

McKrell, Drama Department Prepare Another Big Year

Written by Aziaha Robinson

Mrs. McKrell is an English teacher at Obama Academy, and an alumni of Schenley High School, as well. She not only teaches nouns and verbs, but is the mastermind behind the popular and award-winning Schenley musicals, not to mention the force behind the entire Drama Department at Schenley and Obama.

McKrell has been directing musicals for five years now and began with the show- stopping hit Grease in 2005. When she went to Schenley she also participated in the musicals, and states that her favorite one had to be Guys & Dolls in 1993; which was also the very first musical she ever starred in. She always enjoyed being a part of musicals in her high school years and states that she was determined to share that love with the kids at Schenley. McKrell believes that her students are her inspiration, and when asked who she looks up to, states, “Well I pretty much look up to everybody, considering my height”.

.           Ms. Mckrell highly encourages everyone to try out for the musical. “The best advice I could give to anyone who wants to try out for the musical would be to try out for all three elements of the musical even if you are only comfortable with one.” She also comments that she doesn’t reveal the show until after the auditions take place. She states that she likes to keep everybody on their toes. The auditions are held after winter break, and rehearsals to get ready for the show will take a total of about four months. For Mrs.McKrell right on down to the singers, dancers and instrumentalists, being a part of the musical is certainly a commitment that must be made. The final production of the un-named musical will take place in the last weekend of April, and the first weekend in May.
