The Lady Spartans volleyball team beat Carrick 2 games to 0 to secure their third consecutive city crown. The girls  head to the state playoffs on Saturday at Slippery Rock..

On October 29, 2010 the Lady Spartans volleyball team won their third city league championship title in a row. Playing against Brashear High School, Allderdice High School and Carrick High School, the Lady Spartans walked away with a proud victory. “This year’s championship was special because it was Schenley High School’s last year and we wanted to go out winners. There were three seniors who played all four years and I wanted them to win their last year also,” stated Coach Vitti. The Volleyball team played a strong championship game with Hanna Guy leading the team in kills and blocks. The team worked very hard leading up to the championship round before successfully beating Carrick High School. During an interview Coach Vitti was asked who might the leaders for next year be,  and he made note of Naomi Pernell and Anna Vitti. There were many freshman volleyball players on the team but two freshman players, Gabrielle Egler and Alexandra Bowens played a phenomenal game of volleyball. “Gabby Egler played a large role in the championship game and starts varsity. Alex Bowens also plays a good game and gets varsity time as wel,l” said Coach Vitti, about the 9th grade’s role in the championships. So the Last Schenley Spartan Volleyball team worked very hard and the final 2010 Schenley girls volleyball season was a huge success.

Ein Schuljahr in Deutschland

Written by Dy'nae Shaw

How would you like to get a 15 minute break every other period? Well, student Mariah Benjamin enjoyed such a privilege last year. “My experience was geil (awesome), unglaublich (unbelievable), and spass (fun),” says Mariah Benjamin when asked to describe her trip in three words. This eleventh grade Obama Academy student spent her entire sophomore year in Germany on an exchange student program. There, she enjoyed making friends, partying (almost every week), getting out of school at 1 o’clock, and traveling to various places in Germany.

Throughout her traveling, she encountered some differences in the behaviors of Germans and Americans.  She witnessed how serious Germans are about their education, especially because they are separated into three groups after 5th grade; university, hands on, and in between. The length of school days varied every day and started at 8 in the morning and being dismissed at 1:00, 3:00 or 5:30. Mariah noticed a significant difference in the way teachers and students approach each other (in Germany there are formal and informal ways to say “you”). Additionally, she told Obama Academy reporters that Chuck Taylor shoes were 120 euros in Germany.

The fairly direct manner of the Germans, who strongly believe in saying what you mean and meaning what you say, grew on Mariah quite quickly. With so many differences that Mariah had to adapt to, it made her miss the United States and her family. Yet,  having such a positive and rewarding experience helped her to survive the year. Her most cherished and memorable moments included her birthday party with friends from 10 different countries, a dinner show she did with a friend, and lastly but certainly not least, her Abschloss(going away) party!
