Mr.Singleton–November MS Teacher Feature

Written by Kendra Davis

“We don’t plan to fail, we just fail to plan.”  While these are very clear and accurate words, they also comprise the motto of Mr.Singleton, an Obama Middle School teacher of Social Studies. Mr.Singleton is also known as “Mr.Steve” by his after school program students in the Pittsburgh Project.

Mr.Singleton has been a teacher for 14 years and likes the idea that students  can see teachers as people, too, as is often the case in our newspaper’s “Teacher Feature.”

“I don’t think that I just make an impact on students’ lives; they make impacts on my life, too,” Mr.Singleton says. He also surprisingly adds, “Some of my closest friends were students.”

In fact, students have noted that they enjoy Mr.Singleton’s class because of his rapping, his energy and his willingness to show students both love and respect. With this in mind, he highly recommends the teaching profession, saying, “It’s a great profession, but you need patience. It takes seven or eight years to become a good teacher.”

One minute with Mr.Singleton and you can see why students respect and like him. He enjoys being a teacher, and it shows.

In his free time, Mr.Singleton enjoys fishing and playing horseshoes. He is currently putting a great deal of time into practicing his kickball skills and is still disappointed by his team’s loss in the 1st Annual Obama Teacher Kickball World Series last year. He has already circled the date for the 2nd Annual event, to be played against Mrs.Hodge’s team, the current world champions.

Mrs.Gallo–November HS Teacher Feature

Written by Kendra Davis

“Kids say silly things,” says Obama 10th grade math teacher Mrs.Gallo, “and because of that the days are always interesting” Mrs.Gallo  is the November Teacher Feature recipient and certainly, the idea that kids are unpredictable is one of the reasons she loves teaching.

Mrs.Gallo has been teaching for 11 years and if given the choice, would choose to do it all over again. When asked about her students, she says, “They change the way   I look at the world.”

Of course, math is a difficult course for students but it is also difficult to teach. Because of this, Mrs.Gallo has a motto: “Kiss. Keep it simple, sweety.” That’s good news for anyone who is not an all-star math student.

As you might imagine, Mrs.Gallo’s favorite class in high school was math, but she is also quick to point out some advice for students in her classes today: “Work hard, focus, and always have a positive attitude.”

Mrs.Gallo wanted to become a teacher because she enjoyed working with young people and seeing their perspectives on life.

In her free time, she enjoys going to Pitt games.
