Petri: Things I think I think…that old silver box

That old silver box
“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older” _ Tom Stoppard, British Playwright
You remember back when you were 9? When you would come home, finish your homework then pull out your “Nintendo Game Boy SP” and go to town on some Super Mario 3. Well, at least that’s what I did.
I would come home, grab my Game Boy and then run through the alley ways in Wilkinsburg to get to my friend August’s house and we would play “Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced” or “Fire Emblem and the Sacred Stones”.
Then I’d go over to Jonathan’s and play some Pokémon Ruby.
When we got into middle school we sort of put away the Game Boys and didn’t play much at all….until now. I remember I was in Maryland, in Indian Springs visiting my great grandma. She took me and my sister to the mall, trying to appeal to the stereotype that all teenagers go to the mall and wear belly shirts.
Just to check the price on a new game I noticed a flyer…and that flyer changed my life. Nintendo was giving away 3 legendary beasts of Pokémon Heart Gold and they had different coloration…and as a bonus, if you got them you would be able to get a special Pokémon in the new “Pokémon black or white versions”.
So not only did I realize that Nintendo was giving away special Pokémon but I found out that a new generation of Pokémon was coming out. It was like killing 2 birds with 1 stone.
I had no way of getting these Pokémon, though. I had the games that the event was compatible with, but a few years ago my mom’s car was broken into and they stole my cast iron carrying case with all my games in it.
Luckily my Nintendo DS wasn’t in the case. I thought I wouldn’t be able to get $35 in the time, but I had to get the event. A good friend of mine gave me an old Pokémon game for free. I’m still trying to repay him for it. Now I have 3 Pokémon games that I take with me almost everywhere I go, on the bus, waiting in line, etc.
The point is… I used to be scared to take my DS out in public but now I realize that even though we aren’t 9 anymore, and we try to protect our social status in school and public, there are still kids who go home, do their homework, then take out their DS and get lost in a game of Super Mario Bros 3. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
In addition to the few paragraphs I have written, I would also like to give a shout out to the editors of The Eagle. They are doing a tremendous job editing the articles and columns in desperate need of a grammar check. And I assure you there’s a lot of spelling errors before this hits the editors. I would also like to shout out to Shelby Campbell, Lincoln Griffin, and Nick Nordquist for inspiring me to write about this subject. You never know where inspiration will come from.

Caz’s Column:Misadventures on the East Busway
Written by Lewis 'Caz' Tidrick
On Tuesday March 22, 2011 I walked down to the East Liberty Station with Tommy Sullivan, as I have since the beginning of the winter . We talked about UU things, as always. When the bus came, it wasn’t the normal new-styled EBA. It was the old kind, the kind that is like an airplane, with the luggage thing above us and the padded seats.
A few of us began relaxing in the middle seats, enjoying the air conditioning and talking. We then began talking about how these kinds of busses are never on this route anymore. We kept discussing this for another three or four minutes or so, and then we heard an outcry from the back of the bus. All three of us turned to the back and saw a group of people screaming and yelling and laughing, then one person walked towards the front of the bus yelling “I’m going up here, now! No…NO! DON’T FOLLOW ME UP HERE!” and she stormed up and sat in an empty seat in the front half.
We looked at one another and were immediately awestruck. We had just seen a perfect example of why these kinds of buses go to Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon, and such and not to East Liberty, Wilkinsburg, Swissvale…. It was so blatantly obvious. We enjoy these kinds of busses, right? Especially with the spring and summer coming towards us like a speeding bullet. Then there are tests coming up later this year. At the end of the day I’m sure we’d all like sitting on the air conditioned buses, with the padded seats.
The whole idea of having those newer busses that we have now is to pay less for the busses that go to neighborhoods that will probably ruin the busses and leave them with a mess on them. If the people coming from the East side of town seem to ruin these buses., it’s because they seem to enjoy leaving their garbage and other, uh…items… on the busses. Don’t you think that if PAT gave us the option to have A/C and padded seats on busses after school every day that we would be on our best behavior, or at least try to be, too?

Gene Flowers, at the movies: Go ahead….Make his day
Written by Gene Flowers
Dirty Harry is a fictional series of films starring a San Francisco police department homicide division inspector named “Dirty Harry”. Harry Callahan is portrayed by Clint Eastwood. Eastwood’s character helped popularize the .44 Magnum as he is famously shown wielding his Smith & Wesson Model 29 Revolver. (Google/Wikipedia)
“Nothing is wrong with shooting…as long as the right people get shot.”
—Harry Callahan
The series kicked off in 1971 with its first movie entitled “Dirty Harry”, one of Eastwood’s best. A sadistic and ruthless serial killer named “Scorpio” murders a young woman in a San Francisco swimming pool with a .30-06 hunting rifle. Harry Callahan finds a ransom message for his next two victims if the city does not pay $100,000. Harry Callahan is assigned to the case.
Magnum Force concerns a group of renegade traffic cops who are under-the-table criminals.
They avoided conviction in court, and are killing in cold blood in the streets of San Francisco. Harry Callahan is the right inspector for the case.
“A man’s got to know his limitations.”
—Harry Callahan
The Enforcer
Harry teams up with a female partner for the first time. Together they try to take down a terrorist ring called “The People’s Revolutionary Strike Force”.
Sudden Impact
Callahan is being sent to a small town to follow up a lead in a case. Eventually, the case leads him directly to a rape victim who is out for revenge for her and her sister by killing the people who sexually assaulted them.
The Dead Pool
Harry finds out about a dangerous game called “Dead Pool”, in which people bet on which celebrity will die next. Soon, Harry comes up on the list. Harry Callahan must fight back against the criminal underworld.
These films inspired other movies such as “Sin City: That Yellow Bastard”, “The Protector” and “The Rookie”. The Dirty Harry series may be over, but its legacy lives on.
