Boys tennis team defeated by ‘Dice Dragons 1-4

Written by Caley Donovan

On Thursday, the Schenley Boys Tennis Team took on their arch rival, the Allderdice Dragons. It was a hard fought battle on both sides as each team struggled to come out on top.  Although both teams displayed enormous skill, Allderdice eventually captured the win, 4-1. Sophomore Micah Byrum, Schenley’s #1 singles player, defeated the Allderdice #1 in an intense 3 set match with a final score 6-3 4-6 6-0. The other Schenley players, all of who each got at least a game off of Allderdice, were Jason Yoder (2nd singles), Niger Little-Poole (3rd singles), Isaac Foster Friedman and Malcolm Mitchell (1st doubles), and Tyler Schrenker and Kevin Chrysostome (2nd doubles). Good luck to the team in the upcoming City Playoffs

Petri–Things I think I think–a new report period revolution

Written by Donovan Petri

My new report period revolution

Well, reports cards came out before spring break and we all know that. Now some of us got what we wanted, but some of us, like me, went below our comfort zone GPA. My goal was to remain at 2.5 at least, and I thought I got it for sure, until I saw the 2.2.

That was a wake up call to me.

And I made a pact that this report period, I will go beyond my comfort zone, and shoot for a 3.0 at least.

Now when I first started trying to get a 3.0, it was hard for me just to remember I had work due, but I eventually climbed through my homework and started to get on top of it. And it all stared with a philosophy. I thought that as long as I turn everything in –no matter how late- and get no 0’s on my assignments, then it would be impossible for me to not get a 3.0! And now that I’m looking at my grades, I’m going above and beyond even that!

I never really believed it when teachers would say that it’s easy to get an A in their respective classes, but now I’m starting to see what they mean.

It takes 30 minutes a day. If you have an essay due, I’d do it before I go to bed, and other than that, you can goof off.

So, In honor of my lack of column ideas, I present you my 10 tips to getting A’s in school without actually trying.

 1)      ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION DURING AN INTRO LESSON!

If you know how to do it just a little bit, you will start to develop the concepts on your own.

2)      Homework does count.

Dedicate 30 minutes when you get home to do your homework. If you don’t understand some of it, stop. It’s better to get 50% then 0%

 3) Essays should be done in chunks.

I do a paragraph every night before I go to bed unless I’m in the zone.

 4) Subs are teachers.

Just do some of the work, and then you can goof around

 5) Be nice to the teachers

If you talk a lot in class (like me), being nice to the teachers may reward you in a few extra teacher points.

 6) Be teacher smart.

I’m very street smart but when in school, I put my opinions aside and give the answers the teachers want, not what I believe.

 7) Gym suits.

Keep your gym suit in your backpack or locker; you can wash it at night. This applies for swim suits too.

 8) Don’t be a tool.

Just because I’m giving you help doesn’t mean you need to become a robot, keep your personality and the teachers will like you more.

 9) Pencils are important.

Keep a pencil in your backpack at all times. If you have something to write with then you can at least pretend like you are doing your work.

 10)    Tests count for almost 30% or your grade.

If you don’t know what’s going on during a test, make sure you study. If you have even just a little knowledge about what you are doing, you should be fine.

Now I’m not saying that if you follow these tips you are surely going to get a 4.0, I’m just saying that I went from being a C student to a B student and A student, and it feels great to get good grades. Now if you are a D student I do encourage you to at least try 3 of these tips, and they should help you.

*These tips do not guarantee success. If you screw up, I’m not liable. *

Spartans volleyball team continues dominant ways, pounds Brashear 3-0

Written by Dynae Shaw

This may be the last Schenley boys volleyball game season, however the boys are still striving to keep their reputation up. They did an excellent job of this at tonight’s (4/28/2011) game against Brashear. Varsity and JV won all their games by at least an eight point lead. The varsity teamed kicked off the evening match starting off strong and owning the first game with a resulting score of 25-6 Schenley. Game two was 25-13 Schenley again, and game three 25-16 Schenley.

The JV team did well also. The first game was 25-17 Schenley and the 2nd and last game was 25-13 Schenley. “I am very proud of my guys, they are working hard and they played strong,” legendary coach Pete Vitti reflects after the game. With 5 aces, 8 kills, and 12 scoring sneak plays, I’d say just about any coach would be proud of that. Way to go boys!

Help wanted: Obama seeks mock interviewers

Written by Brittany Terry

Every year, Barack Obama Academy holds mock interviews for its students to help them get ready for the real world and what they will see when they someday interview for employment. At this time, Obama counselor Mrs.Walker is seeking professionals  to interview students so that they can prepare for success. If you are a business professional or know something of the hiring and interviewing process, we’d love to have you to school to act as potential employer. The experience will not only be memorable for our students, but insightful, as well.

Guitar club is a winner

Written by Yoka Rooney

When I walked into guitar club, I saw kids sitting on chairs, the floor, and anywhere that seemed confortable. But they weren’t just talking about the usual gossip, they were actually learning how to play guitar!

I interviewed Mr. Copich, who is the head of this club. I asked him why he wanted to create it. He responded in a very calm voice, “I want to provide the opportunity to kids, so they can share their talents. I want them to learn how to play in an environment that is without any peer pressure.”

The kids were so consumed in learning guitar that they didn’t even need Mr. Copich to keep them on task. The students who were a little more advanced than the others were teaching the others how to play.

I interviewed Imani Milliones Roman who was learning how to play guitar with one of the more experienced kids. Her reason to play was simple.

“I wanted to learn how to play since I play piano.” She says she loves the club, and hopes that by the end she can play guitar. She also recommended this club to anyone who wanted to learn how to play guitar, because it’s a fun and encouraging experience for anyone.

Although Mr. Copich’s club is a success, he had hoped he could have more guitars so that all the kids would have one to play.  Perhaps this can be accommodated in the future.

Does music influence our actions?

Written by Jada McClain Ellis, Jazmine Lindsey, Kionna Woods

          “Today’s Music and Today’s Youth”

Music is everywhere, if it’s not on the radio then someone is carrying around an iPod-listening on the go. Music plays a big part in teen lives today, but the big question is ‘Does today’s music really influence teen behavior?’ Many teens today listen to lyrics that are degrading to females, violent, and disrespectful.

We interviewed Schenley’s school psychology teacher Mrs. Kiesel to see if she could give us her opinion on the topic. After asking her the big question, she stated that she does feel that music has a big impact on the youth. She also revealed that “Some research shows that music highly influences mood regulation” She also shared with us that she thinks the influence today is more good than bad, but in some genres of music the lyrics are offensive. Many people would likely disagree with her.

When we talked to our parents, they stated that most of these violent and horrifying lyrics have a big impact on the lives of the youth.  They feel that the young teens imitate what they hear because they think it would be cool to act like the famous people that they listen to.

So the question remains, does music have an impact on the way people act. If you’re wondering, maybe you should try an experiment one day. Go for a few free hours without the music you listen to. After a little while, reflect on how you have been acting and feeling. Has there been any difference?
