College Bound Reading Club: Taking reading to the next level

Written by Chloe Mobley

8th grader (at the time) Chloe Mobley wrote this for the paper in early May and did a wonderful job.

Every Friday after school, at least 30 students regularly make their way to College Bound Reading Club. Last year, Mr. Dumbroski started this reading group when parents requested that their kids read more classics.

The name “college bound” is actually a list of books students should read before college. That is not the only name that this book club has though. “Our nickname is N.E.R.D., North Eastern Reading Division,” said Mr. Dumbroski.

The goals of college bound reading club are to have students read more on their own and to discuss the novels that they have read. The book club challenges students by having them question concepts in the story.

When I talked to Ashley, a student who has been in book club for two years, she explained, “We read new and different books that I would probably never read otherwise.” Ashley is right in that respect. Many classics have been taken out of the school system.

Book Club has reached every genre, ranging from mystery all the way to realistic fiction. Most kids read five to six books during the year. The first few books are from a list of classics and the last are the student’s choice.

Here is a list of some of the books they have read:

Classics Student Choice
Lord of the Flies Hunger Games
Catcher and the Rye 8th Grade Bites
The Hobbit Catching Fire
Swiss Family Robinson The Shining
Treasure Island
The Outsiders

As the year comes to a close, the students of the College Bound Reading Club are reading their last book of the year. Most of them plan on coming back next year.

Tennis team has strong showing at 1st day of tournament

Written by Caley Donovan

Yesterday at the Schenley Oval, the Boys Singles Tournament began, with three rounds being played. The Schenley Spartans had four players entered in the tournament: Micah Byrum (the tournament’s #1 seed), Niger Little-Poole (seeded 5th), Malcolm Mitchell, and Kevin Chrysostome. Both Mitchell and Chrysostome lost in the 2nd round, with scores of 6-8 and 5-8 respectively. Little-Poole, who had a bye in the 1st round, won his 2nd round match 8-2. However, in the quarterfinals, he lost 2-8 to one of Allderdice’s players. Micah Byrum, who also had a bye, won his 2nd round match 8-0 and his quarterfinal match 8-2 to advance to the semifinals which take place today. He will be the only non-Allderdice player in the semis. Good luck to Micah and Coach Demmler!!
