Boys soccer team serves notice; thrashes Carrick 5-0

Written by Brandon Hutton, The Eagle Staff Reporter

Boys Soccer Starts with a Shut-Out Win.

The Obama Eagles soccer team, also known as USO, had its first game on Wednesday against Carrick. The game was held at Cupples Stadium and the boys won 5-0. Abraham Kouyate had all five goals with many assists by the team.

The beginning of this game didn’t look so good. Carrick had possession for the first couple minutes, but once Obama got possession their passing worked splendidly. They quickly moved the ball up field to their strikers who were, for the most part, Malcolm Mitchell and Abe Kouyate. They took a one goal lead within four minutes. Abraham took control of the scorning and scored all of their goals from his striker position. Good passing all around by the team which made it a lot easier for him to keep making goals. Dan Denlinger also played a good game; he made a spectacular jumping save to keep his shut out. However, that was just about the only hard thing that Dan had to do. Dan had to make very few saves as the defense did a very good job in keeping the shots to a minimum.

However, there was a bad thing to this game: a starting striker was injured. Malcolm Mitchell pulled a muscle is his thigh and the sports trainer had to take him to the locker room to examine it thoroughly. He will be out for four weeks due to his injury.

I wanted to get to know the team a little better so I asked a couple of questions. I asked them about the team, new coaches, and thenew jerseys. I talked to Sam Conturo, Yoka Rooney, Abraham Kouate, and the assistant coach, Andy Miller.

Sam Conturo:

Q: How well do you think your team will do this year?

Sam: I think we will do outstanding and we will make a name for Obama.

Q: Do you think you will beat ‘Dice this year?

Sam: ‘Dice who?

Q: Do you see anything that your team could improve on?

Sam: I think that they could toughen up a bit and hit the weight room, but that’s about all.

Yoka Rooney:

Q: How well do you think your team will do this year?

Yoka: I think we will do fairly well considering the seniors we lost last year. I also think we have a lot of potential this year.

Q: Do you like the new coach?

Yoka: Yeah, I like him. O like the drills we do and I like how he has played professionally in four different countries.

Q: Do you think you’ll beat ‘Dice this year?

Yoka: I think we have a chance to beat them.

Abraham Kouyate:

Q: Are you satisfied with your team’s and your own performance today?

Abraham: We played okay; I had a lot of fun.

Q: Are you happy with amount of goals you scored?

Abraham: I am satisfied with it. I’m just trying to help my team in any way I can.

Assistant Coach Miller:

Q: Are you happy with your team’s performance today?

Coach: Yes, I am satisfied with it.

Q: Do you see anything your team can improve on?

Coach: I think that the defense did well. However, the offense should pass more and should have more of a connection.

Q: How well do you think your team will do this season?

Coach: I am unsure because we have only played one team. However, we did have a good start and we played good.

I also asked the team in general about their jerseys.

Q: Do you like thenew jerseys?

Team: We like them, but they’re thick and hot. They remind me of the middle school ones.

A word to the wise, in two acts

Written by Shelby Campbell, Editor-in-Chief

Alright, so I work as a lifeguard for Citiparks. I was originally placed at Westwood pool, but for the remainder of the summer I was placed atMoorepool. Now, part of a lifeguard’s duty includes cleaning (the bathrooms, the pool, vomit, etc.). Well, the director of the aquatics division had stopped by for her daily visit and the Head guard decided that the bathrooms needed to be cleaned again (even though we cleaned them the day before). So I get the help of some of the other guards and started to get the bucket ready with cleaner packets and water. I open one packet; put it in the bucket, I open the second packet and it ends my left eye. Awesome, right? WRONG!

We flush out my eye with the hose and some saline drops from the first aid kit, it stops burning for the rest of the day. Well, eight rolls around and my vision starts to go blurry. Mother takes me to the ER. We get there around 9:30. So, the doctor puts some Ph paper on my eye and says that it’s a 9..when it’s supposed to be between a 7.34 and an 8. Fantastic. So, the way to get it back down is to flush it out or irrigate it with some saline solution.  It takes 6 bags to get it back down. Super fun! We get home about 2:30 a.m.

The lesson here is; take a lot more caution when you’re cleaning with industrial strength cleaners.

Another word…..

On Labor Day the pool was closed due to the weather and cold temperatures, so we order pizza, eat it, and then decide to go play ‘No Ground,’ which is a game of it-tag but you can’t touch the ground or you’re it. We play that for a while. No injuries yet.

Well, now here’s the good part. We decide to go back down to the pool. My head guard was sitting on an orange tunnel thingy and I was crawling underneath it. Right before I go to say “Tim, DON’T MOVE!” he hops down..right onto my shoulders. Alright, so this guy is like 220, easy. I get forced to the ground by his weight and end up with my head between my knees in a sitting position. I go to stand up and can’t walk on my left leg.

On my way to the ER, I start to go into shock and convulse uncontrollably. The nurses get me on a gurney. Apparently the muscle in the lower left of my back was pulled so badly that I can hardly move without any pain. Awesome. They give me some pain meds and send me on my merry way.

The moral of the story: Speak before you act in cases where injury is most likely going to occur if you keep silent.
