Girls finish 2nd in city team tennis championships

Written by Sakae Nakahara

The Girls Tennis Team faced off against longtime-rival Allderdice for the title of first in the city yesterday (Thursday). As always, ‘dice’ proved to be a hard opponent to beat. The girls made some impressive plays, but were crushed in all 5 matches in the end. That isn’t to say the Obama Eagles weren’t proud of the effort they put in. One notable player was junior Rina Matsuda who played 3rd singles. Rina was injured after trying to hit a backhand into the ad-court and missed. She tumbled onto her left side, scraped her right wrist, left shoulder, and left knee, and had to take a medical timeout to be bandaged. Despite all this, when asked if she wanted to continue play, she immediately said ‘yes’. She went on to win 2 games and had the best score out of the whole team. “[She] played like a true champion,” said Coach Demmler.
