Google tour amazes students
Written by Josh Scherrer, The Eagle Staff Reporter
A select group of Obama middle and high school students went to the Google headquarters across the street from our very own school on Saturday, October 12. The students were treated to a tour of the fantastic offices in which Google workers make the world’s favorite search engine.
On the tour the students were shown the offices and cubicles that the Google programmers worked at, the café where they got free food, and all the other places in between. They also were shown some of Google’s fanciest gadgets, including one that student Sierra Mittermeier said was the coolest thing she saw. That piece of technology was a tablet computer with an astronomy app that showed all the stars in whichever way you pointed it… including through the earth.
The students had a positive reaction in general, and specifically liked a lot of the things that they saw. The main thing was how laid back of a work environment the Google offices were, with Nerf guns at every cubicle, pets in the offices, and a massage room. Of course, it didn’t hurt at all that Google gives their employees free meals everyday prepared by their own personal chef. Olivia Grubbs said that her favorite part of the offices was the central part of it, which had a huge cargo net (think giant hammock) and lots of windows.
After going on this unique tour, the students of Obama felt that it would be a great place to work. The work environment impressed the students and made doing math all day long seem genuinely fun and enjoyable. Of course, math isn’t for everyone, but as Olivia Grubbs said, “If I could find a job in Google that fits with the career I want, I would definitely go for it.”

Joel’s Corner: Does anyone still play internet games; MW3 vs Battlefield 3
.
Written by Joel Macklin, The Eagle Columnist
Internet games have been online since the start of the commercial internet. They are always played at school, at the library, but rarely at home. Nowadays people are hooked on consol based games like Playstation, Xbox, and Wii. Console gaming systems are usually a onetime cost, except for some online multiplayer, that allows you to play wider variety of games. There have been a few good computer games made that require a lot, but computer gaming is a dying industry. Game systems are now equipped to have internet browsing features that are almost as good, if not better than a computer itself. Computers are still a living part of society and are helpful but at the current rate of computer based gamers, the fun entertainment aspect of computers will be dissolved.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 are two new upcoming games that have been all the rage for the past 6 months. Modern Warfare 3 is due for release November 8, 2011 while Battlefield 3 is due on October 25, 2011.
Call of Duty (COD) has owned the gaming market on Play Station 3 and Xbox for the past few years but the Battlefield producers feel they have the experience, originality, and newer software to compete and beat COD.
Battlefield 3 is a sequel to previous Battlefield games in its WW3 style. COD Modern Warfare 3 is the sequel to COD Modern Warfare 2 which is in the midst of WW3 with single- player gameplay in cities all over the world like New York, London, and Paris. The tech team behind Battlefield 3 says that the new software engine, Frostbite 2, which is supposed to make gameplay much more realistic using shadows, real postures of soldiers, and unbelievable damage effects.
I personally am a die-hard COD fan that thinks COD Modern Warfare 3 will be better than Battlefield 3 on all levels, single-player and multiplayer. Battlefield doesn’t know how to appeal to the millions of console-gamers out there looking for a great first-person shooter. This is probably COD’s last successful installation in the first-person shooter business unless they come up with another game-changer.

Senior Night a huge success; girls volleyball team crushes Allderdice
Written by Ilana Diamant, The Eagle Staff Reporter
There was a large turnout for the annual Senior Night for the girls’ volleyball team and even a small group of Allderdice fans, but by the last varsity game the room was filled and even Dr. Walters was waving the Obama Swag Flag!
“I hope we win! Basically if we pass [the ball] the game is ours,” said sophomore Alex Bowens before the game. The JV team provided a nice lead-in for the varsity, with a 2-1 win. “Our first and third games were good!” Said freshman Miriam Levenson, with Sarah Parker adding “The third game was awesome!” The third game had ended with a score of 15-6.
In the time between the JV and Varsity games, Coach Vitti honored the 2 seniors of the varsity team, Naomi Purnell and Tayuanna Jackson for Senior Night. It was a sweet moment for Naomi Purnell. “I waited four years for this and I’m just so happy!” It also was an inspiring moment for many of the junior varsity as well. “I’m really excited to be a senior now! It really makes me want to stay with the team.” Said Miriam Levenson, quickly adding, “but it’s also going to be really sad to let this year’s seniors go!”
The varsity team then began their pounding of the Allderdice Dragons. In a 3-0 blowout, the girls started strong, though the game remained close. By the middle, the score was 16 to 13. The gym was loud with cheers and the Lady Eagles were passing well. The game ended with a 25-22. The next game was a huge comeback, from a 10-3 beginning of the second round to a 25-19 closer. There was lots of stomping of feet and yelling from the stands and the bench as the Lady Eagles soared past an Allderdice team that was clearly running out of steam. The final game ended with a near-shutout of 25-5. “I’m very proud of our volleyball team!” Exclaimed Dr. Walters. Coach Vitti remarked, “It’s always nice to beat Allderdice. We had a good win. We weren’t playing our best at first but we did what we had to do.”
The game ended as a great evening for both teams and a great memory for the departing seniors.
