Scherrer: The trouble with dress codes
Written by Joshua Scherrer, The Eagle senior Writer
School dress codes are a very touchy subject because they are culturally important, but have little logical justification. That is not to say that there is no reason that your teachers keep telling you to put on a belt. In truth, lots of schools use a dress code as a method of reducing school violence. According to a study done by Snell and Volokh, as many as 52% of schools respond to school violence by instituting a dress code, and certain studies and papers cite a strict dress code as being an effective method of reducing school violence.
However, that brings up the question: At what cost? You may hear some students go on about their first amendment right to freedom of expression, and you may also hear some teachers say that certain rights have to be withheld from you to preserve the safety of all students. Despite all of this, we have to question why we have first amendment rights in the first place if they are just going to be taken away during school. Why should they exist at all if they only make us unsafe?
The answer is simply that the right to freedom of expression is one which is absolutely vital to the development of a democratic and successful society. A communication of ideas is needed to make a working community that grows and develops in a constructive way. And whether that communication is through writing, speaking, singing, art, dance, or yes, clothing, it is always valuable. So why isn’t it something that is valued in schools?

The middle school Lady Eagles managed to stay undefeated as they beat the Sunnyside Dragons on Wednesday. The Eagles started the game off very powerfully, ending the first quarter 20 to 0. After halftime, the Eagles were ready for a Dragon challenge, and the defense played hard but the Dragons attacked and scored four points. That didn’t stop the Eagles as they kept their heads in the game, using team work as Obama won the game 54 to 4. The Eagles are flying high and preparing for more opponents. As the cheerleaders say, “We’re too hot to handle”.
