Obama begins preparations for move to Peabody building

Written by Kendra Davis, The Eagle Staff Reporter

Part 1 in a series

Next fall, Obama Academy will be moving to Peabody. The school formally known as Frick moved into the building it is currently in during the 2009-2010 school year, and is set to move yet again.

At present, there are both positive and negative feelings toward this move but not many people hear the students’ side. Ben Freemen thinks the move is good and is not one driven by financial difficulty because the building is bigger. “The moves actually will save money in the long run.” said Ben.

Chekaesha Neal likes the idea of moving but says the lockers are way smaller. Many people agree with the move but there are also students against it, like Taylor Newman who doesn’t really want to move because she is used to the school and doesn’t want to have to learn a whole new one.

“I think it’s dumb; it’s more work for people who live far away because its so out of the way,” she says.

She wonders what we need a bigger place for if there are relatively few students in the school now.

Ready or not, like it or not, the move comes at the end of the year. If you went through the move from Frick to Reizenstein, then you already know the drill: lots of packing and unpacking, and things being temporarily misplaced. And of course, lots of getting used to the new place.

We will continue to examine this move from many angles in the weeks ahead.

Jymier Johnson: Ghost Recon

Written by Jymier Johnson, The Eagle Columnist

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier made by Tom Clancy is the fourth installment of the Ghost Recon Series. Previously known as Ghost Recon 4, this game was developed by Ubisoft and was said to be released in May of 2012. Designed by Jean-Marc Geoffrey and written by Richard Dansky Ghost Recon is featured on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo 3Ds, PSP (Playstation Portable), Wii, and Microsoft Windows.

Ghost Recon has been said to be the best Tom Clancy game he has ever made in his career. Tom Clancy is the creator of the entire Ghost Recon series and obviously wrote books before he started making games. Tom Clancy books featured many subjects, from military fiction to just plain old science-fiction. He started merging his books with game developers and out came Ghost Recon.

Ghost Recon is about a squad of five marines that have to go through many obstacles in order to complete their missions. Ghost Recons is a third-person shooter when playing on the Nintendo 3Ds or Microsoft Windows but when played on a console such as X-box 360 or Playstation 3 it turns into a first person shooter like Call of Duty or Battlefield.

The plot for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is set to be in the next 10 to 20 years. Near about Norway, the Middle East, and Asia where Russia went to war. The recon team’s mission would be to assassinate a evil Russian scientist who is invading the streets and hurting innocent people. Kozak, Pepper, 30k, and Bones (the recon team) is the team the player will control. This game has a few betas out right now but so far it is winning acclaim and reviewed to be a pretty exciting game.

January/February MS Teacher Feature: Mrs.Festa wears many hats

Written by Dasja Irwin for The Eagle

Most middle school students know and appreciate our January/February Teacher of the Month Mrs.Festa. On one hand, they know her as someone who has helped their math and computer skills improve and on another, they know that when something on their own computers goes wrong, she is the person to talk to for a remedy.

Mrs.Festa is the math teacher for 6th and 7th graders, as well as the 6th grade computer technology instructor. While she says that she loves Obama Academy, she recognizes that like most teachers, getting students to complete their work is a continual challenge.

But while that challenge can be extremely difficult, she also sees it as an opportunity for a rewarding outcome, as she says that “seeing that kid finally getting something, and having that ‘aha’ moment” is very gratifying. Of course, students who just don’t put in that extra effort usually get what Mrs.Festa calls her  least favorite moment, the phone call home.

When she is not in the classroom or fixing computer problems all over the school, Mrs.Festa can usually be found around ice. Her two sons are hockey players, and she is involved as well, as a skate program teacher and coach.

She even has an ice skating rink in her back yard.

Students and teachers alike appreciate the talents of Mrs.Festa, our January/February Teacher of the Month.

For Taylor, Carla, the future is now

Written by Teona Andrews, for The Eagle

The girls basketball team has had a nice run so far this year and is hoping to make some noise come playoff time. Two seniors have played a large part in the success, and I spoke to Taylor Smith and Carla Reed about their thoughts on the season so far.

Both girls believe that the goal for the team is to play hard and win the championship. The team is in the thick of the regular season race, and Carla feels the season has been “good, especially compared to last year.” Taylor believes that “the team is learning every day” and “can make a long run…maybe into the championship.”

Both girls will be going to college, but they have different goals. Taylor wants to play at the next level and would “love to play at Penn State.” Meanwhile, Carla, a track superstar runner, would only be interested if she is offered a scholarship to play basketball.

Right now however, the girls are enjoying the season and have dreams of accomplishing more.
