Black History Month profile: William Still

William Still was born in 1821 inNew Jersey. He began working for the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society after moving toPhiladelphiain 1844. Little did he know that he would become somewhere close to a millionaire. After Still’s job at the Anti-Slave Society he began working as the leader of an African American organization that helped slaves improve their rights and their conditions.
He kept many detailed records of the slaves that he assisted. One of the slaves that he met turned out to be his brother who was sold away from the family further down south. While inPhiladelphiahe also worked in coal businesses. When the only publishing topics that existed were on African Americans, William Still published his work with the Underground Railroad. William soon died on July 14, 1902.
