June HS Teacher Feature: Mrs.Opatt
Written by Chloe Mobley, The Eagle Staff Reporter
Ms. Opatt is finishing her third year as a public school teacher, teaching grades 9-12. During her time here at Obama she has had many fond memories and experiences.
Her favorite part of her job is working with the students, although she has also found it difficult to find time to work with everyone that needs her help.
When I asked her what she had learned from teaching she said, “I have learned to be fair and honest.”
When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Opatt enjoys going to her camp and riding her ATV. “I’ve been riding 4-wheelers since I was little,” said Ms. Opatt.
In addition to her work as a teacher, Ms. Opatt took charge of the yearbook this year. “I wanted to make sure they had it. It’s a big part of your high school career… to be able to reminice,” Ms. Opatt said.
As the first senior class of Obama graduates Ms. Opatt is proud of all the kids she worked with, and will be sad to see the seniors go.
“My advice to the students at Obama is just to find the perserverance to do the work that needs to be done, because it will pay off.”

End of an era
Written by Monet Murphy, The Eagle Staff Writer
“I really want to stay, but I’m 67 years old, tired, and my knees are giving me more trouble this year than in my whole life. It’s time for me to go.”
Dr.Benz is known throughout the school as the vice-principal. He frequently tends to the needs of the students and is the resolver in cases with fighting, but many do not think of how old he’s getting, what he did before he came to Obama, nor how he feels counting down to his last days. So I went to ask him.
I asked just how he felt about vice-principal-ing at Obama. He says it was a great experience and he had fun helping to grow the high school even commenting that he felt like a shepherd.
Dr.Benz worked a lot before he came to be a vice-principal at Obama, such as being a superintendant, director of special education, and even starting a program for deaf/hard of hearing children that has spread nationwide, so of course a hard working man like him can’t take the idea of the stereotypical retirement with the days in rocking chairs and chatting leisurely. Nope, Dr.Benz has decided that he wants to try and get into the Catholic school system or go out of state and try his game at the housing business.
When asked of the reception he has received once people found out that he is retiring, Obamaians have predictably begged him to stay if only for another year. But his decision to retire stands firm .
He sighs and says, “I’m gonna miss everything about this.”
