Review: Hunger Games a huge winner
Written by Ivy Ryan, The Eagle Staff Reporter
Have you seen The Hunger Games yet? Have you read the books? If not, you better get right on it, because it’s all anyone has been talking about, and will be for a while! It premiered on March 23rd, and hit the box office at 115 million dollars. The story follows a girl name Katniss Everdeen(played by Jennifer Lawrence), and she lives in a future North America, called Panem. There are 12 districts that surround the Capitol, the city that holds power over the rest of the nation. Each year, each district has to offer up a boy and a girl from the age of 12 to 18 to compete in an annual event called the Hunger Games. The Capitol puts these kids from each district, called tributes, in an arena somewhere, where they fight to the death. They say the reason for these games is because of The Uprising, when all 13 districts rose up against the Capitol. During the Uprising, the thirteenth district was destroyed.
As a reader of the books, they really did a fantastic job with the movie. They really kept true to the story with a lot of small details, but some other readers have been complaining about how they didn’t leave in one thing that the characters said to each other etc. Even though they may not have had the movie be word for word to the book, and maybe decided not to use some scenes, they still filled up that space with things they made up. To an audience that have not read the books, it helps them understand the plot line better if they changed some things, rather than having it be a 4 hour long movie and be exactly like the book. The movie was from an audience point of view, watching the hunger games, rather than it being like you know what Katniss is thinking all of the time in the books. It really helped develop the Capitol, like how weird they are and sometimes how cruel watching these children on television getting slaughtered. Not to give anything away, but the ending was quite good. You see President Snow turning and walking up the stairs, and it kind of eludes to the second book. It shows how much President Snow feels about rebellion and what his actions might be in the next movie.
Overall its a brilliant movie. There are some bits that have blood and are a but disturbing, but nothing that will make you want to look away. I’ve seen it with friends that haven’t read the book, and have loved it so much. They were on the edge of their chairs awaiting the next move of the characters, and have now been compelled to read the books! If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go the next chance you get!
