Cabaret wows audience again. Is it the last one?
Written by Victoria Volpe, The Eagle Staff Reporter
The 4th Annual Obama Cabaret made visitors feel instantly important upon revival. Tables were set up everywhere and with cozy lighting, which set the mood. A maitre’d came over and seated us at a table, and we were greeted by a waitress, who in reality was one of Obama’s students. They gave great service, and stayed on top of everything. We were served a meal that included a salad, a roll, pasta, and dessert. But, the dining experience wasn’t the highlight of the evening; it was the show, of course.
Cabaret started out with a birthday party setting, and the song “Party Rock Anthem”. They danced with great choreography and the party rocked. They moved on to “Son of a Preacher Man” where Naomi stole the performance. She provided some sass while she showed her talent. Then Fletcher Jones took a solo singing “Pretty Woman” where he shared a “kiss” and serenaded Aziaha and the rest of the girls at the birthday party. And what came next had to be one of the best out of the performances, with Keyanna Taylor Thomas singing “My Heart Will Go On”. She blew the crowd away with her amazing performance, that sent chills up my spine. When she was singing you believed the words that came out. Her heart seemed to be filled with passion.
Then Chyeyenne Campbell, Jordan Griffin, and Hailey Brady sang, “We Are Never Getting Back Together”. It was a fun and upbeat song that everybody sang along with. The next song “Electric Slide” was a dance-along that got the crowd involved. The cast pulled people out of the crowd and they all danced and showed off their moves. Then Scott Moore sang “Call Me Irresponsible”. It was jazzy, well sung, and made you want to snap your fingers and sway back and forth. Then Keyanna Taylor Thomas, Ms McKrell and Mrs.Sharif-Lucas sang “Count On Me,” another highlight of the night. The teachers showed of their vocal skills and did it well.
“Ooh Child” sung by Jaymonn Taylor, was heartwarming and a song that many could relate to. Daniel Wimer took a solo singing “Hallelujah,” where he played guitar and wooed the crowd. He set the mood to a warm soulful feeling. He will certainly go places someday. Then Imani Chisom provided a tremendous performance of “All I Could Do Is Cry.” She is a really good singer and has awesome talent. “My Heart Will Go On” nce for the powerful vocals of Keyanna, Imani and Gabi King to take center stage and they poured their hearts out. You felt like family, as the other cast members swayed back and forth as they held candles. The last song was “I Had The Time of My Life,” which ended the night on a light, upbeat, happy note.
Cabaret was a complete winner for the Obama Drama Department, from the food and service at dinner, to the performances and choreography by students and staff. Sadly, it might have been the last Cabaret, as the work involved has been described extremely time-consuming and stressful. Time will tell.
