Top Sports ’11-’12: Girls volleyball team brings home first title as Obama

Written by Aaron Buettner, The Eagle Staff Reporter

“ I want every other team to know we play no games, we’re in it to win it… and have fun,” said volleyball senior  Tayaunna Jackson after winning the  Girls Volleyball City Championship, which is also the first championship Obama Academy has won. Of course, the girls couldn’t be prouder.

“I was hoping and praying we would win,” she continued. “It meant so much.”

The Obama girls won all their matches that day playing Brashear in Quarter-Finals, Allderdice in semi-finals and then Allderdice again in the championship game, beating them 25-21.

It was a double elimination tournament, meaning you had to lose twice to be eliminated and after working hard all year the new Obama team couldn’t wait to prove themselves.  They had lost half their starting line up the previous year since they were seniors so to Coach Vitti, this was a rebuilding year but as it turned out, it became so much more. “ They exceeded my expectations,” Coach Vitti said before the game. He went on to say that “a lot of girls are playing varsity for the first time this year”, and he just hoped they would play to the best of their ability.

“We have to be confident that if we play up to our potential we’ll win.”

And they did.

Talking to him after winning the game he said, “They deserve it and I’m so proud of them.”

His hopes for next year were just as bright, “Our goal is to be as good as we can individually and as a team.” He always tells the team to never accept mediocrity and to reach your potential.

Dr. Walters, who also attended the game, said, “This is the first team to bring home championships” and  stated that for next year, he hopes they will be bigger and better.

He went on to say, “They had a great season and this was 100% Obama swag”.
