We all know the little birds that trot around downtown, the birds that many people dislike. I am not quite sure why, considering these birds, pigeons, are amazing. These birds were quite useful in the past. They are smart creatures that are highly underrated.

Carrier pigeons were a tremendous help in many wars, including both World War I and World War II. During these strenuous, lasting wars, homing pigeons were used to send messages and small supplies to troops. These pigeons helped save many lives.

In addition to being used during wars pigeons have been used in art. There is an artist, Duke Riley, who adores pigeons. Throughout his life he owned many pigeons and he believes that they are remarkable creatures, this I’d have to agree with. Duke Riley used 2000 pigeons in an art piece titled “Fly by Night”, that  ran through weekends from May 7th to June 19, 2016. The pigeons lit up the night sky at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. These birds had LED lights attached to their ankles and were trained to fly during the night.

Many people believe that when releasing pigeons a great distance from their original location they will be disoriented and won’t be able to find their way back. This is false, pigeons can indeed find their way back home. There are theories that say the birds sense the earth’s magnetic field. It is also believed that they tune into the surrounding sounds and smells helping them navigate their way home.

If you still doubt the amazingness of  pigeons here is additional information you may not know:

-Long ago in Europe there were large bird houses built for pigeons, called Dovecotes. These birdhouses were a symbol of wealth and “status”.

-In the past pigeons were not viewed as something gross but rather a helpful animal.

-Apparently Darwin studied the different breeds of pigeons and how they all originated from the Rock pigeon.

-Pigeons are considered one of the most intelligent birds.

-Pigeons are symbolic in many religions.

-Pigeons are amazing.

-The everyday pigeon we see in the city has dark gray feathers with an iridescent neck, truly an exquisite animal

Pigeons. Why don’t people realize the true beauty of them? Yes, birds can carry disease, but is that enough reason to treat them like scum? The answer to that is NO. Pigeons, or rather all birds are amazing, they do not deserve to get sticks thrown at them or kicked by humans.
