On Monday, April 3, 2017, the Obama Academy baseball team had its first ever WPIAL game. And they won. In a scrappy but well-played bout, Obama edged out Kiski Area by a score of 4-2 to set their all-time conference record to 1-0.
The game was silent for the first three innings, with both teams deadlocked at 0 in what looked to be the makings of a pitchers’ duel, but Obama kicked off the scoring, picking up a run apiece in both the fourth and fifth. Refusing to go down without a fight, Kiski retaliated with a two-run sixth to even the score at 2 going into the final inning. It was here that Obama proved their mettle, rallying for another two in the seventh before easily dispatching their opposition in the bottom of the frame to roll to the victory.
On the backs of captains Zach Beckman, who racked up two hits on the day, and Nick Consentino, who worked a masterful complete game from the hill, Obama was able to start off on the right foot early note early into their WPIAL days. With any luck, they’ll be able to continue in similar form.
