All You Need to Know About... Junji Ito!

Junji Ito is an amazing horror manga writer. Ito’s characters often find themselves inexplicably driven toward their fates, compelled against their better judgment to find out what dangers await them. Ito’s work is very graphic and gory, and each of his mangas are very distinct from the last. If you are a horror fan you will really love him.

Ito was inspired by his older sisters and the work of Kazuo Umezu. At first, drawing manga was just a hobby for him while he was working as a dental technician. In 1987, he submitted a short story entitled Tomie to Gekkan Halloween. His inspiration, Umezu, was a judge and he got a honorable mention from him.

Some of Ito’s notable works are Tomie, Uzumaki, and Gyo. Tomie is Ito’s first award winning work. In his words: “Tomie is a bizarre tale of a dead person returning to life as if nothing ever happened. I was inspired by the phenomenon of lizard-tail regeneration. Tomie is a story where people fascinated with the girl end up killing her, accelerating her rebirth. The proliferation of Tomie was created while writing a serial storyline, which helped greatly to convey the concept of regeneration.” Tomie is one of my favorite mangas by him and it is a very interesting read. Some scenes can be confusing, but they all make sense in the end. Gyo is about about a couple, Tadashi and Kaori, as they fight to survive against a mysterious horde of fish with metal legs powered by an odor known as the “death stench”. It was turned into an anime and it is very popular and well known in Japan. Uzumaki is his most well known manga. In a survey I conducted, Uzumaki was the most known out of thirteen of his other mangas. Uzumaki is about a teenager in a town which is cursed by supernatural events involving spirals. They might not sound terrifying, but once you read it you are in for a real spook.
