Poem: Black History

Emoni Jones, For the Eagle Online

It’s not just a celebration of a people overcoming their struggles
Not just a culture, but an era of change
We don’t just celebrate this month for its effectiveness to innovate
We celebrate not just for their endless fight for our rights

We celebrate those who sought and fought neither for a better city nor a better country,
But a better nation
So many lives risked and endangered just so we can do the simple things
That are a part of our daily lives

The caged bird that sings is finally free
The day has come to let our freedom ring
We are the new generation
Black History should be our motivation
