Ben Eppinger All-Section WPIAL Player

Ben Eppinger has recently been made All-WPIAL, the second time in two years that an Obama Academy has had a player named this prestigious title. Ben has been voted by WPIAL coaches one of the top players from every WPIAL team.

If you drive by Heth’s Field on a Sunday afternoon, you might see one of Obama Academy’s star soccer players working on his skills. It takes a lot of hours to perfect your touch. Ben Eppinger has been named All-WPIAL in AA soccer, an especially impressive feat considering that Obama was in arguably the toughest section in WPIAL AA this year.

Ben scored twice this year, and in the typical role of a key center midfielder, he had many assists. He says early in the season he was more of a defensive center mid, but as the season progressed he was moved up to an attacking mid, which he believes was an improvement both for his own play and the team’s success.

When asked to elaborate on the team’s season, Ben mentions that many of their opponents thought it was unfair they had to play against someone who looked 35 years old. If you see him once his beard grows back, you might have to sympathize with them. When I asked how he felt after beating Allderdice, who won their AAA section, on Senior Night, Ben said simply, “It was nice to beat Dice.” What a poet.

During the spring season Ben plays for Arsenal Football Club of PA. He is already set to play soccer for Dickinson College next year. He wants to thank his coaches, especially Coach P, for the great season and helping him progress as a player. Congratulations going out to him! Can’t wait to see what he’ll achieve in college!
