On Tuesday, February 21, the Florida House of Representatives rejected a motion to ban the selling of semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles. This motion was turned down in the wake of last week’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Florida.

The House voted down the motion 71 to 36 within three minutes as survivors of the shooting watched from the gallery of the Capitol. Survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were watching in the gallery, as the lawmakers voted not to consider the ban on assault rifles. Less than an hour after the denial of the bill, they passed a resolution stating that pornography is a public health risk.

“It was just so heartbreaking to see how many names were up there, especially after it was my school,” stated Sheryl Acquaroli, a junior at Stoneman Douglas who was watching, “It seemed almost heartless how they immediately pushed the button to say no. They had a chance to stop it today. If there is another mass shooting it’s going to be their fault.”
