This past summer, Obama students took a ten-day trip to France and Spain. It was an incredible experience for the students involved, and the teachers in the World Language Department are already planning another trip. This next trip, during June 2016, will be to Costa Rica.

The trip will be day ten days, with nine days actually spent in Costa Rica and one day spent traveling. It is open to all students at Obama, but students that take Spanish are especially encouraged to sign up. Additionally, each student can take one family member or friend with them on the trip. Currently, 26 students have signed up for the trip. Mr. Roa is hoping to get about 40 students total for the trip so that they can fill up one bus.

As far as the trip itself, it will begin with the group flying into San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Then, the group will spend several days in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest before visiting the Poás Volcano. After that, the group will spend some time at a lake, with activities such as kayaking, before spending the last part of the trip at a beach.

Mr. Roa believes the trip is a great opportunity for students. “It is a chance for them to use their language in a real-life setting,” he says, before adding that it is also good for students to see other places outside of their neighborhoods. Travel is a good way to apply your education, particularly with foreign language instruction.

The trip is relatively expensive, costing about $2400 per person. However, there is a $200 discount for the trip if the initial deposit is made by December 15, which brings the price down to $2200. Fundraisers are already being organized to help interested students raise enough money for the trip.  The first one, which will occur this December, is an empanada sale in the lunchroom. Mr. Roa is also looking into a chocolate fundraiser, where students sell the sweets to their families and friends. Either way, with the trip not being until June 2016, there will be plenty of opportunities for students to fundraise the money they need.
