Alternative Facts: Week 2

Isaac Degenholtz, Writer, Website Director

In the past two weeks President Trump and his administration have been telling more “Alternative Facts” to the media sometimes they are just exaggerations but others have been bold faced accusations with no facts to back them up.

  1. 122 vicious prisoners, released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield. Just another terrible decision! Seen on Twitter March 7th.

False. This number is only slightly correct. There have been 122 prisoners released from Guantanamo Bay who rejoined terrorist cells but 113 of them were released by George W. Bush and only 9 by Barack Obama.

2.ObamaCare is a complete and total disaster – is imploding fast! Seen on Twitter March 7th

False. Although with some initial issues with the website Obamacare has insured over 20 million people and allows affordable Care for those who couldn’t get it previously.

  1. Sean Spicer told media that Trump would take a lighter tone on Immigration, when he did nothing of the sort. Feb. 28th

False. During his address Trump was extremely aggressive on immigration as he reaffirmed support for the wall and Spicer lied to the media to boost their opinion of him before the speech.

  1. The White House claimed controversy over Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a partisan attack. Press Briefing March 1st

Unfortunately, even some Republicans believe that Jeff Sessions has been compromised making this controversy a bi-partisan attack.

4.Kellyanne Conway spread a report that two prominent Democrats didn’t stand and applaud during the standing ovation for the widow of a Navy SEAL. Twitter March 1st.

Kellyanne tweeted about this incident after Trump’s speech to congress on March 1st but the photo included with her report was from another unrelated moment of the speech and there is no corroboration from anyone else who was present at the speech.

  1. Trump claimed Obama is behind protests and leaks against his administration. March 4th (Fox and Friends)

With no evidence  Mr. Trump claimed that his predecessor has orchestrated leaks and protests against him, there of course is no evidence of Mr. Obama doing this but just his word, which is apparently enough to make it truth.

  1. Obama illegal Wiretap seen on Twitter March 4th

After interviewing with Fox and Friends Mr. Trmp then went on to bash the former President for placing an illegal wiretap on Trump Towers. While doing this he misspelled tap (tapp) but what was worse was that it is impossible for Mr. Obama to bug Mr. Trump during the election. But other government agencies could with a FISA warrant, which is a legal way of surveilling someone in matters of National Security.

7.“According to data provided by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of individuals convicted for terrorism-related offences since 9/11 came here from outside of our country. We have seen the attacks at home – from Boston to San Bernardino to the Pentagon and yes, even the World Trade Centre.” Speech Feb. 28th.

It is true that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by foreign-born terrorists but both the Boston Marathon Bombing and the San Bernardino shooting were planned by Native Born people who were later radicalized. Furthermore the most recent government information does not back up his claim. The report said of 82 people the government determined were inspired by a foreign terrorist group to attempt or carry out an attack in the US, just over half were native-born.

  1. The new budget will offer “one of the largest increases in national defense spending in American history”. Speech Feb. 28th.

The military defense increases he proposed is still over 10% but even in this decade Military spending has been higher. During the Bush Era it was raised higher than Mr. Trump’s proposal as well as the beginning of the Obama era.

  1. Sean Spicer called the new bill “the Obamacare replacement plan that everyone has been asking for”Press briefing March 2nd.

Polls have shown that most of America does not want to replace Obamacare especially with the new replacement plan from the right. The new plan only benefits the rich while hurting the poor. Although the Republicans think Americans want to replace the Affordable Care Act it is not true.

  1. It is so pathetic that the Dems have still not approved my full Cabinet. Twitter March 3rd.

Err. It’s not that the Democrats haven’t filled his nominations but he hasn’t given the Senate anymore nominations. Senator Marco Rubio posted “After the votes taken earlier this afternoon, the U.S. Senate has now confirmed all of the available Cabinet nominations.”on March 2nd even before the President’s tweets.
