Another Obama baseball season is in the books. And although the record, at 5-12, may give the casual observer the impression that the season was one to forget, the reality of the situation was quite the contrary. Yes, the Eagles failed to win a single WPIAL game. Yes, the vast majority of losses came via the mercy rule. Yes, not a single player managed to hit above .300. But when reflecting on such matters, it is essential to focus on the positive takeaways.

For starters, 5-12 is an improvement over last year’s 3-13. Perhaps the numerous rainouts to start the campaign were indeed a harbinger of misfortune to come, as the team’s first several games were, to put it mildly, ugly. But as time progressed, the tides began to turn. Hits were no longer as few and far between. Pitching was sharper. Perhaps most importantly, the volume of errors – which plagued Obama’s defensive efforts throughout most of the former half of the season – was cut down significantly. Playing time was divided up more equally, and the results were surprisingly positive. At the end of the day, each and every young athlete bolstered his skills. And so the season came to a poetic close last Wednesday in a double-header sweep over Westinghouse in which Dionte Vickers, Jerome Angell, and Hiro Sosa were each honored during Senior Night ceremonies.

Alas, despite its improvements, the team will find itself in the 4A section of WPIALs next season, one division below 5A, which had been its position for the past two years. Said captain Zach Beckman, “While I’m not satisfied with our section play at all, I think that we have a pretty solid team and the transition to 4A baseball could be a great thing. We just have to start practicing and really work towards getting better.”
