When someone says the word “Grunge”, there is one band that comes to mind, and that band is Nirvana.Nirvana was one of the first bands to introduce the grunge style music into the United States; there music style was based off of the Alternative Rock band Sonic Youth.

Nirvana was formed in 1987 by Kurt Cobain & Krist Novoselic. Cobain was the lead singer/guitarist, and Novoselic was the bassist. The band would look for a drummer, when Dave Grohl had filled that position. He was the longest drummer the band had.

The band would find success with the 2nd studio album titled Nevermind. It was released on September 24th, 1991. The cover art for the album featured a naked baby boy in a pool, reaching for a one dollar bill. The first single on the album was Smells like Teen Spirit. The song features topics that he and his friend Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill were discussing. These topics were anarchy, rock music, etc. The music video features the band performing in a crowd of teenagers sitting in the bleachers of a high school. The music video turns out to have the crowd turn into a mob and riot with the band. The song reached #1 on the 1991/92 music charts in Belgium, France, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States. The song received a platinum certificate.

The band’s next song on the album was titled In Bloom. Cobain said the song was to address people that did not get the band’s message. It was released on November 30th, 1992. The music video features the band parodying 1960’s bands performing in front of a crowd of people. The song reached #5 in the USA music charts and #7 in the Irish music charts.

Nirvana’s last hit on the album was titled Come as You Are. The song was released March 3, 1992. The music video features the band performing with water splashing the screen. The song topped #3 in the New Zealand Music charts for 1992.
