If you are someone who is interested in K-pop or have never heard of it before, this is just for you. Kpop is a music genre; it is South Korean pop music. There are many boy bands, girl groups, soloists, and duets. Kpop is very popular in a lot of countries besides South Korea.  It is very known in the U.S. but some of my classmates have never even heard of it. More than half of my classmates knew what K-pop is, they even listed some of the bands they knew. The most common ones are EXO, Big Bang, Shinee, BTS, and the infamous Psy. Some people had other opinions on K-pop. One even stated that “It sucks.” Some disagree with that statement. Kpop is very widely known and liked by many people. Even with the language barrier people still seem to love it.

The 1st groups to debut is Seo Taiji and Boys. They debuted in 1992 with the song  Nan Arayo. This song was the start of  Kpop it also was named number 36 on the list of the 5o Greatest Boy Band Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. Many groups followed suit after them.

One of the most popular 2nd Generation (2001-2008) groups is Girl Generation. Many people know about Girls Generation, the nine-member girl group who debuted in 2007. But people don’t know the groups before that. For example S.E.S, BABY V.O.X, and Fin.K.l very known Kpop groups at their time. During 1997 and 1998 these groups were popular all through South Korea and were known for their extraordinary vocals.

The third generation (2009-2011) is when many talented groups debuted. Including After School, 2NE1,T-ara, f(x), Beast, Teen Top, B1a4, Boyfriend and so many more. Sadly most of the groups from that era have disbanded or are no longer active. But if you are new to Kpop, I highly recommend giving those bands a try.  Try listening to Beast’s song Butterfly” or B1a4’s recent comeback “A Lie”. Those songs won’t disappoint.

The evolution of Kpop is amazing. The music and style have changed so much. If you compare a 1st generation to a 4th generation group you will see a huge difference. If you look at all the different eras of it, you can really see how it has grown so much. Kpop is spreading so much, the genre is listened to everywhere and it has a giant impact.
