Today, I will be talking about college being free or costing money. I surveyed people inside of school and outside of school as to whether or not college should be free. The results were as follows: 64% said that college should be free and 36% thought that college should cost money. According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2016–2017 school year was $33,480 at private colleges, $9,650 for state residents at public colleges, and $24,930 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. That is a lot of money. In the following article, I will be giving two reasons why college should be free and two reasons why college shouldn’t be free.

One reason why college should be free is that everyone could graduate debt free and start fueling the economy. More people would go on to tertiary education if it was free, which means that more Americans would become college educated. Educated people tend to make better decisions because they are educated.

Another reason why college should be free is that there are people who are in the world right now that cannot afford to go to college. They might have brilliant brains that could help support the world or have ideas that could change the world completely. However, all those ideas vanish because of the barrier in front of them. They cannot afford to go to colleges. We do not know what those people have in their minds. Most likely, they would benefit us even a little bit.

As for the two reasons that college should not be free, one is that it would literally mean high school all over again. Many people would no doubt take college for granted if it was free. I am currently a high school freshman who is heading off to 10th grade this year and I can say that most of the kids in my school don’t care one bit. We need to make sure that college students are prepared to put effort into their work. You have to remember that college is for those people that truly care for their education and, unlike college, high school is meant to give a very basic education to people. Unlike high school, college is an option that one can decide to take or leave behind, and for those who really want to educate themselves further, it’s worth every penny for them. I have to admit that although college is quite expensive and that I might have a hard time affording it, it would be worth it knowing that the majority of students around me care for their education.

Another reason why college shouldn’t be free is that the government needs the colleges to pay them so that the government can pay them back (for things like staff and other things). If this flow of money is not created, we will be stuck in a deficit for the rest of our lives. This may also lead to higher taxes which of course means you have to pay way more money. If you get a scholarship then you are set for a college, but if you don’t then you might not be the best fit for it.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why college should be free and there are many reasons why it should not be free. Some people say college being free would be good while others say it would be bad.

After becoming more familiar with the two sides of the debate, I would vote for college not being free. Do you think college should be free?
