Most women or young girls are insecure about their looks. If you have a disease that changes your physical looks, you could become even more self-conscious about yourself. But that didn’t stop Winnie Harlow.

Ms. Harlow became a Canadian fashion model, spokeswoman, and activist even with her skin condition vitiligo. Vitiligo is a disorder in which white patches of the skin appear on different parts of the body. This happens because the skin cells are destroyed. These cells are called melanocytes. Harlow was first diagnosed at the age of four.

Growing up was hard for Winnie. She was bullied for the way she looked. Peers at school taunted her with cruel nicknames such as “Cow” and “Zebra”. “The bullying was so bad that I was forced to drop out and be homeschooled,” Harlow recalled. But as she got older, Harlow says, she began to learn to love herself despite what anyone had to say about her. She said, “This gave me the courage to really stand up to anyone or any obstacle in my life” (CNN).

Winnie Harlow got her big break when Tyra Banks discovered her on Instagram. She was subsequently picked to be one of the fourteen finalists of the twenty-first cycle of America’s Next Top Model. When on the show, Tyra said, “her skin breaks down barriers of what is considered beautiful.”

After appearing on America’s Next Top Model Ms. Harlow’s career skyrocketed. The agency “The Squad” of London signed her.

When asked about her thoughts on Winnie Harlow, Amanda Jones said, “I think she is beautiful and really brave for becoming a spokeswoman for her skin disease.” Ms. Harlow overcame a lot and she gives advice to young girls, saying, “No matter what it is or what people think about it, if it’s your dream, never settle.” Winnie Harlow is only 23 years of age and still has her whole life to make an impact on this world.
