Sin City certainly lived up to its name.

Home of casinos, gambling, and all-out sinful pleasure, Las Vegas was bound to witness such a horrible event as its most recent shooting. The incident, now more than ever, has citizens debating on how to interpret the 2nd Amendment – whether or not there should be stricter gun control/regulations.

The shooting happened late at night at the Mandalay Bay Hotel on October 1st. It killed 58 people and injured about 500. The gunman was 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, NV. Investigators say he had brought 23 of his 47 guns to his hotel room, with most of the firearms being modified rifles. It is also said that Paddock also had explosives in his home and car, one of which was ammonium nitrate. His motives, however, are still unknown.

This tragedy got me thinking about gun restrictions in the U.S., and how we may be a bit more lenient than most people realize, at least when it comes to having the right to own a firearm. The 2nd Amendment was written back in 1791 as part of the original ten amendments to the Constitution known as the Bill of Rights. Written by James Madison, the amendment states, “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” It was passed for two main reasons. One was that it was seen as a compromise between Federalists – those who supported the Constitution as it was originally ratified – and the anti-Federalists – those who believed the states should have more power. The other was to give the citizens the opportunity to fight back against any tyrannical federal government. Seeing as they had only used firearms to defend themselves against the British, Americans wanted to have that right if there should ever be a need for it once more. Unfortunately, as time passed and the country grew, the amendment would become very contradictory and upsetting to many citizens.

In my opinion, there is no fully logical explanation as to why someone would have more than 2-6 guns, whether it is for hunting purposes or protection. I understand the desire to collect nice items and keep them together, but having very similar models of the same types of gun isn’t necessary (that is, unless you’re planning something like a shooting). The government should keep records of the amounts and specific models of guns each person owns. If there was a set limit on the number of firearms someone is allowed to have, the amount of incidents as deadly as the shooting in Las Vegas could potentially be significantly reduced. I know that each state has its own restrictions pertaining to guns, but they must see the dangers posed by the lack of enforcement of these laws. We’re no longer living in the 1700s. So why do we continue to pretend like we are?
