Nowadays, students all around the U.S are getting chances to learn more about the forever changing world and extensive culture of others outside these borders. This is a glorious opportunity for students from Pittsburgh to represent the city, their school, and their families and give them a good rep. Jason Thomas is a 10th-grade student at Barack Obama Academy who has earned a scholarship to travel to Berlin for the summer.

It’s an amazing site to see the youth of the city being given chances to explore this world on a larger scale, but it’s even more of a sight when it’s a student like Jason Thomas from Obama Academy getting this chance. Jason was selected to travel to Berlin, Germany with a scholarship of $5, 700 and will be going with the desire of learning more about the culture and the language. He will also be taking classes there as well. When interviewing Jason, his answers really gave me a solid understanding of how he feels about this opportunity given to him and his take on German in his life in general. Jason says that he was happy when he first learned about the scholarship and hopes to “…explore a different culture first hand and have fun while doing it.” It’s no surprise at why Jason Thomas was chosen for the scholarship. He is most likely the most experienced with the language as he has been taking it since kindergarten. Even though he may not be the best or most fluent German speaker (as he as stated himself that he is at least decent) that still does not disqualify him from this glorious opportunity. Not only that, but the opportunity itself can give Jason the ability to use this new found knowledge and skill in future parts of his life, even though Jason has not thought about doing so yet at this stage in his life he is still willing to keep an open mind. He stated, “German isn’t a huge part of my life, but I guess this opportunity might give it more meaning in my life maybe but I don’t know.” Even though he is still unsure, introducing students to new fields and opportunities like this is definitely the way to go in letting students get these chances and expressing themselves in any ways possible.

Hopefully, Jason takes advantage of this new opportunity as he is a part of some of the lucky few who even get close to opportunities like this. It does seem though, that Jason is excited about this trip and will try to use it to his best ability. All that we Pittsburghers can do is wish him the best for now, and wish him good luck on his travels. Auf Wiedersehen, Jason!
